A big portion of this unit's work has centered on the different ways we use our imagination. At the beginning of the unit we brainstormed all of the ways we currently use our imaginations using the FUNCTION concept key. We gradually sorted these ideas into categories and decided that imagination is mostly connected to creating, thinking, pretending, designing and redesigning. A lot of questions arose as we continued to explore. Our investigation pursued an answer to one student's 'seed of thought': "I wonder how many different types of imagination we have". As we continued exploring, we made many independent discoveries. Miss Alison also demonstrated several uses of imagination that we had not thought of. The black and white sticky notes represent new ideas that were added when revising our original poster.

This week Grade 1AC started a new unit in Maths called "Solving Story Problems". It focuses on counting and comparing larger quantities and on composing and decomposing numbers into several parts. There is also the added challenge of finding all of the 2-addend combinations of a number. The children will revisit familiar addition activities with variations that encourage 'counting on'. They will also encounter the operation of subtraction. Our work will develop strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems. Happy birthday to Aran who turns 7 today! Aran treated us to some delicious cupcakes baked by his mum (who many of the students now think is "the best baker ever!"). Thank you Aran for sharing your birthday celebrations with us. We hope you enjoy celebrating with your family this weekend!
As part of our unit of inquiry and literacy lessons, Grade 1AC has been pursuing an investigation into creative writing using our imaginations. We have focused our attention on the natural world around us and inquired into how we can view it from different perspectives. We have been inspired by books such as Alice in Wonderland (in which Alice grows big and small) and Not a Stick (in which a stick is thought of as everything but a stick). On Wednesday, October 31 we visited the Singapore Botanic Gardens rainforest area to collect ideas for our writing. We were so intrigued by all the beautiful sights and sounds and had so much fun thinking of ideas for stories. After making sketches, writing word list, and taking videos and photos using the ipads, we each planned our stories using a beginning, middle, and end template. When we got back to school our Grade 4 buddies helped us to start our stories. Later in the week, we reviewed the photos and videos we collected and added to our ideas and plans, before completing our stories. This morning at our Morning Meeting, Georgia shared some work that she had done over the weekend. She had hand drawn a national flag for each child in the class based on where she knew her friends were born or had spent most of their lives. What a nice surprise for all of us! Georgia demonstrated how knowledgeable she was about national flags and gave other children a chance to demonstrate their knowledge. Every child was able to identify their flag and many children were able to identify all of the flags shared. Thank you Georgia for this Morning Meeting treat!
